Making Love Last a Lifetime

Yesterday night, we finished our pre-marital counseling workshop. It was one of my favorite parts of the wedding planning because we focused on what would happen after the honeymoon. Our marriage counselor brought up questions about holidays, our families, our future plans, children, and almost anything else you can think of! Here are some of my favorite lessons that she preached:
1. Be nice to each other.  Sometimes it is easiest to take things out on the people we love, but we should always be nicer to each other than we are to other people.
2. Become a unit. Our counselor told us that we need to come together as our own free standing unit.  In the same breath, we need to make sure to recognize our individual families and their differences.
3. Listen, actively. Sometimes couples talk or argue, but aren't actually listening to each other. At times one person is just waiting for the other person to finish so they can say their piece. But we need to listen.
4. Never let material possessions become too important. One of my favorite Bible themes that our counselor quoted was "I have no possessions, but I have everything." She told us to remember that love is stronger than anything.
5. Be your spouse's biggest cheerleader.  Always build each other up and always be proud of each other.

I love this. This is very valuable to every relationship and I honestly believe every couple should have to go through a workshop like this. I know when the time comes for me to tie the knot, I will being doing it!

I love this post! I agree with you, our premartial counseling was the best part of all the wedding planning hoopla. It's amazing how much you remember, and how much you use it. It's helped us a lot already in just our first year of marriage! :)
